Whether you're planning your first family portrait or updating the photo wall at home, choosing the right poses can turn a simple session into a joyful memory.
At Those Days, we’ve photographed hundreds of Malaysian families — from toddlers taking their first steps to cheeky teenagers stealing the spotlight. Here are 7 family photo pose tips that are always a hit with parents and kids alike — with real warmth, laughter, and love.
1. Walk, Run, Laugh – Just Be Yourselves
Where it works best: parks, beaches, open fields
When to try: at the start of the shoot, to warm up
This is one of our go-to poses — but it hardly feels like one. Just hold hands, take a stroll, and chat like you normally would. Sometimes we ask parents to do a light jog, or walk back and forth while looking at each other or their kids.
Why it works: The candid laughs, the little feet trying to keep up, and the way everyone naturally looks at each other — it captures the real bond.
Pro tip: Don’t overthink it. Let the kids lead — their spontaneous smiles are gold.
2. Stacked Together – Layered With Love
Where: grassy field, picnic spot, even your backyard
When: mid-session when everyone’s warmed up
Let dad sit cross-legged on the grass, child on his shoulders, and mum gently supporting from behind. Everyone looks toward the same direction — sometimes at a tree, a sunset, or even a curious bird.
Why it works: This pose shows physical closeness and layered affection — literally stacked together as a team.
Malaysian touch: If your child has a favourite toy, let them hold it — it adds personality and keeps them happy.
3. Peekaboo Play – Let’s Have Some Fun
Where: parks with big trees or pillars
When: when the kids get restless
Use a tree as a playful prop. Parents hide behind one side, the child in front — or everyone chases around the tree. It’s chaos in the best way.
Why it works: Kids forget about the camera when they’re playing. You get laughter, movement, and moments that feel like childhood.
Safety tip: Make sure the ground isn’t slippery. We’ll always guide you on this!
4. Cheek to Cheek – One Tight Hug
Where: Any quiet background — garden, studio, or bedroom window
When: toward the end when emotions are warmed up
Mum holds the child on one side, dad on the other. Everyone leans in, cheek to cheek. Mum kisses the little one’s cheek, dad kisses mum’s forehead — and we capture a moment full of heart.
Why it works: This pose speaks volumes — a family wrapped in love, physically and emotionally.
Tip: It works especially well with toddlers or babies who love being held.
5. Lift Me Up – The Classic Dad Move
Where: open spaces with blue skies
When: when energy is high
Dad lifts the child into the air, mum laughs nearby or reaches out as if catching them. The expression on the kid’s face? Pure joy.
Why it works: This is strength, trust, and fun — all in one frame.
💡 Bonus tip: Do a few takes — once at full height, once halfway — so we can catch different smiles.
6. Swing Time – Simple But Magical
Where: wide pathway or park trail
When: mid-session or after a snack break
Parents stand side by side, holding the child’s hands in the middle. On the count of three — swing! Depending on the child’s personality, it could be laughter or a surprised “ehhh!”
Why it works: It captures motion and emotion — kids love the thrill, and parents love the giggles.
Adjust if needed: For shy kids, just lifting one foot off the ground can work too.
7. Backview – A Poetic Ending
Where: long pathway, jetty, forest trail
When: final scene of the day
Holding hands, walking away from the camera. The lighting is soft, and we let the scene breathe. Sometimes we ask the child to turn back for one last look.
Why it works: It’s timeless and emotional. The image of walking into the future — together.
Framing tip: Works great for canvas prints or year-end photo books.
Family photos aren’t about stiff smiles or perfect poses. They’re about connection, movement, and everyday love. That’s what we aim to capture at Those Days.
So whether you’re doing your session in Penang, KL, or your own backyard — remember:
